Nicaragua Surf YogaVolunteer AdventureThanksgiving 2009  11.22.09 - 11.29.09

Monique Evans

"While  traveling extensively around the world  while working in youth marketing for global brands, I experienced not only the beauty and culture of several developing coutnries, but also the needs of local people that weren't receiving the financial benefits from the tourism industry.  I started SYRV as a not for profit company that offered a unique trip format  that incorporates local hosts and  not only fulfilled the cultural and adventure aspects of traveling, but inspired travelers to include volunteering into their recreational travels. While having the opportunity to enjoy the countries beauty we are commited to donating 70% of our time in assisting the host community with short and long term humanitarian projects. It's truly an amazing and gratifying experience that I can't share it enough.

For more information about our trips and projects feel free to contact me at monique@syrv.org or 310 713 1878."

"In 2006, I escaped the freezing Canadian winter with a backpacking and surf trip along the Pacific Coast of Nicaragua. When I reached the village of Jiquilillo, he knew I had found my second home. I launched Jiquilillo  Lodge as a way of sharing the joys of surfing with other travelers, and sharing the benefits of small-scale tourism with local people. Drawing on my years as a teacher, I am using the Lodge as a way to generate funds for local educational development. In 2008/2009, I started working with leaders in Jiquilillo to create a social and environmental plan including future construction of a medical centre and future water project to provide quality drinking water for the entire community."

"What I've been able to figure out with the help of Bryan Kest and many other instructors over the years is that yoga has made me a little more familiar with my body.  It has made me a little more accepting of my weaknesses, and a little more comfortable with my life.

At the very least, I just want to be able to pass some of that juicy goodness on to you.  At most, I want to send you off after savasana with a yoga coma that hangs with you long after you leave the room and never quite goes away.

My classes are open to all levels.  There are so many great instructors out there that can help guide you as you explore yourself physically, mentally, and spiritually.  Keep at it.  You’ll be amazed at what you’re capable of the more you learn to just get out of your own way. Find out more about my classes at
