Volunteer Program

Ecotourism

"Responsible travel to natural areas that conserves the environment and improves the well-being of local people." (TIES, 1990)

Ecotourism is about uniting conservation, communities, and sustainable travel. This means that those who implement and participate in ecotourism activities should follow the following ecotourism principles:
- minimize impact
- build environmental and cultural awareness and respect
- provide positive experiences for both visitors and hosts
- provide direct financial benefits for conservation provide financial benefits and empowerment for local people
- raise sensitivity to host countries' political, environmental, and social climate

Our “volunteer lifestyle vacations”  incorporate the beauty and culture of Nicaragua with the opportunity to work on community projects. These programs are extremely flexible, allowing for our guests to decide how little or how much they would like to be involved and contribute. Everything counts.

Education
65% of the population in and around Jiquilillo is children. The local school is in serious need of expansion. There are too many kids for the classrooms and it is necessary to build more. We are currently raising money to add on to the existing school, add to the playground and a playing field. We are providing school uniforms for the ones who cannot afford them while feeding the local school kids (250) every week or two after school.

Health
Currently there is not a medical facility or doctors in the village. Partnering with another organization we are building a greatly needed medical center for the local community. We will be host to rotating doctors and medical professionals from around the world to give free services to the locals.

The number one health issue at this time is clean drinking water. Besides our establishment, currently there are two ways the community gets drinking water;  1) Pumped from their own well which is extremely unsanitary and causes illness  2) Residents send their ‘gerry’ can on the chicken bus to Chinendega to get filled with "city" water that they use to drink. This water while they are used to it, is not good for them. Project completion: 2010.

"The Nicaragua Surf Yoga Volunteer Adventure really gave me the opportunity to use my skills and knowledge to give back to the community, as well as enabling me to experience the beauty and culture of Nicaragua in a very hands-on and personal way. Donating just one week of my time I was able to collaborate with a great team to provide clean drinking water for hundreds of school children for many years to come. More than any other project I have completed during my career it was the water purification shelter that made the years of education at  architecture school worthwhile.  It is amazing to see how even the most modest project can have such a significant impact on the lives of those that are in need." – L.
